Ayurvedic Treatment Of The Menopause

Many women today are turning to natural therapies for the treatment of their menopause symptoms and the ancient form of medicine known as Ayurveda is one of the most popular forms of natural treatment used by women the world over. According to the laws of Ayurveda the key to controlling the symptoms of the menopause is to cleanse the body of everyday impurities which can cause internal imbalances if left to accumulate.

This cleansing of impurities can easily be done with just a few changes to your diet and life style and if the following steps are adhered to then the pre-menopause years i.e. when the symptoms are at their strongest, will be made a great deal easier.

1. Avoid stress wherever possible - we all know that this isn't as easy as it sounds, especially when you have a high powered job or you have a family to care for. If you can't avoid stress then it is important to de-stress at the end of each day so that you don't become tense. This may involve performing yoga or Tai Chi or maybe you just want to read a few pages of your favourite book. Do whatever makes you relaxed but try to put aside at least an hour a day when you can breathe deeply and forget your troubles.

2. Watch what types of food you eat - you should try to eat foods that are easy to digest, especially if you are eating in the evening. Try a tasty soup or some steamed vegetables and grains and if possible don't eat anything after 8pm as it is around this time that your digestive system naturally shuts down.

3. Eat your main meal early - most families eat their main meal in the evening however the digestive system is not working at its full capacity at this time. This means that some hard-to-digest foods aren't fully digested before you retire for the night and this can lead to some of the symptoms of the menopause such as night sweats and hot flashes. If you can you should eat the largest meal of the day at around midday so that everything is digested and settled well before bedtime.

4. Avoid eating leftovers - we all know how tempting it is to eat yesterday's leftovers rather than cook something fresh however it is thought that left over food produces more toxins in the body than freshly prepared food. As the aim of Ayurvedic treatment is to cleanse the body of toxins then eating the leftovers really doesn't help matters!

5. Give yourself a warm massage before bed - this stimulates the skin to excrete toxins while also calming the emotions, especially if you use scented oils as massage oils. You could even ask your partner to massage the bits you can't reach.

6. Go to bed early - the body has its own natural detoxification processes that occur between the hours of 10pm and 2am. These processes work much better if the body is at rest ad so an early night will definitely help the cleansing process.

The principles of Ayurveda have been used to treat all illnesses for thousands of years in India however it is only recently that it has become popular in the US. Even if the steps above have little effect on your menopause symptoms at least you will be cleansed from the inside and this alone will lift your spirits and make you feel better about yourself.
